CD TWO (1994-1995)

1.Idiot Revolution / Hello Hello
2.Pop Goes the Weasel
3.Blockhead
4.Small Things
5.Dear Abby

1994: Recording commenced for the best E.P. ever made!!! Well, "Jerk Lessons" was conceived and recorded specifically to be an E.P., so we had that going for us. We did "Idiot Revolution" and "Hello Hello" in one big take. Besides the remaining 4 tracks, we also recorded "Oreo" and "Stand By Me". Dyslexic Records, which was essentially Jason Jackson, had already put out "Superinc." We split the costs with Jason (about $1000 apiece) to press 1000 CDs. "Jerk Lessons" was released as a 10", and cost even more. I still remember buying 1000 ziplock bags at Sam's Club for this thing. I'm sure Jason had a harder time selling vinyl, and we ended up selling quite a few up in Canada, where the punk rockers still have turntables (thank you, Mike Todd, our Canadian Connection). These songs were mixed in one marathon session, which was little more than a party at Solid Sound Studios, with poor Phil trying to work in the middle of our chaos. Darryl and Bob of the Bollweevils contributed back-up vocals throughout, and Erik Pertl did the cover art. This is my favorite release. These versions are the original mixes, straight from DAT.

6.Torn
7.Brian Peterson

1994: Live in Elgin, 6/4/94. Brian Peterson put on shows first at the Turners Club, and then the Third Floor in Elgin. It was unbelievably hot every time. One show ended with a cop running into the place, picking up Todd, and running off stage with him. I miss those days. "Torn" was attempted with Phil, but never finished. It doesn't sound much like our other stuff. The naked man may be Thug, an old acquaintance who frequently lost his clothes. This must have been recorded by John Emerson, a man who not only did sound at some of the sketchiest venues and shows, but was a great friend to all the bands who played Elgin. Thank you, John.

8.Great Escape
9.Mealy Mouth
10.Hopeless & Fucked
11.Sixteen
12.13 (DOA)
13.All American
14.Personal Best
15.Teen Anger
16.Girl
17.Torn

1994: "Daterape Nation" sessions. "Great Escape" has different vocals; "Mealy Mouth" was attempted but never finished; "Hopeless & Fucked" is the version from the vinyl 7" (an earlier take was eventually used for the CD release). "Sixteen", "13", and "All American" are actually final mixes that I found quite by accident. These were never used, so I think we fucked up when labeling the DATs. "Personal Best", "Teen Anger" and "Girl" are all earlier, alternate takes. "Torn" was never finished. Recording again with Phil at Solid Sound, what was intended as a 7" called "Born Again Hard" quickly became another E.P., this time a double for Johann's Face. Marc and Gar at Johann's Face did a great job of putting on shows in the area to promote our new recordings. Most significantly, Marc got punk rock shows back at the Metro. I can remember many great shows with Oblivion, Sidekick Kato, and No Empathy. Those were good days.

18.Greatest Dad
19.Microscopic

1994: Live in Elgin again, 9/24/94. Again, I'm sure John Emerson recorded these. He also did the bonus tracks on the Johann's Face "Daterape Nation" CD. We also played "Doublecross" for the very last time on this night.

20.Sixteen
21.Jerk Lessons
22.Gay Parade
23.Be Alright
24.Butter on the Rim
25.Sorry
26.Kicking My Head In
27.Smoker's Cough
28.Sorry 'Bout the Mess
29.Not My Kind of Guy
30.So Emotional
31.Space Glaze
32.Cindy (Nip Drivers)

1995: The beginnings of "Easy Instructions for Complex Machinery". Instead of duplicating the final sequencing, these songs are listed in the order we recorded them. Tracks 20-26 are the first session in early 1995. Tracks 27-32, and 1-4 (CD Three) were recorded about six weeks later. Tom Anderson from Sidekick Kato guests on "So Emotional". This was our first full length for Johann's Face. These versions are Phil Bonnet's final mixes, straight from DAT.
